Asset Management Internship
During the summer of 2025–2026, I had the opportunity to work within MainPower's Network team as an Asset Management Intern. I primarily worked with the Asset Management team but also spent time with the Design team and the Control Room crew.
My main responsibility was to assist the Asset Management team in developing a process for responding to LiDAR data. I produced a guideline document for MainPower covering the full workflow, from data acquisition through to modelling recommendations and examples, including alternative methods to their existing system.
I also worked with their digital twin software, using it to visualise point cloud data overlaid onto a GIS map. This gave further insight into preventative maintenance opportunities, such as vegetation management and identifying low-hanging overhead lines.
In addition, I spent time reviewing historic defect data and entering it into their current defect management system. This process taught me how a given asset group tends to fail and how those defects are handled internally, while also giving me a deeper understanding of how a rural network operates and how each asset type functions in detail.
Finally, I spent time with the drone crew conducting pole inspections for overheated assets. This included making recommendations from an Asset Management perspective on how the team should capture pole inspection media, to support a more efficient inspection-to-defect assignment process internally.
